Shaxi is a historic market town in Jianchuan County, Dali, Yunnan province, China. It’s part of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, a trade route that once stretched from the tea-producing region of Yunnan to Tibet, and further on to Nepal and India.

Shaxi started as a trading point during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD) but reached its golden age during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 – 1912 AD). It was a bustling hub where goods like tea, horse, salt, and other commodities were traded.
