October is the beginning of the autumn season in Yunnan. It also marks the end of the rainy seasons and the whole area of Yunnan is stepping into the days of dry air and fresh sunny weather.

Some of the famous touring destinations in Yunnan are getting more popular this season. Because autumn will turn lots of plants into bright golden and also brings a great time of harvest.

In today’s post, let’s pay some attention to the marvellous border city – Tengchong and the Pudacuo National Park that owns breathtaking scenery.

Tengchong – an ancient and important border city

Tengchong is a famous border city of Yunnan. It is a trade port connecting Yunnan to Myanmar, India, Pakistan and other Southeast Asian countries. It has become a border town since the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. Tengchong is also a town that full of mystery due to its unique geographical location and its residences of 23 ethnic minorities.

Touring attraction – Gingko Village

In autumn, the Gingko tree will turn in to bright golden colour which makes the whole Gingko village covered in glowing golden light.

Sitting in the yard of a traditional Chinese country house, tasting traditional Chinese tea and chilling beneath the clear blue sky, you will sense that the beauty of Gingko Village is not limited to its pretty scenery; it’s also about the merge of nature and villager’s daily life.

When visiting Gingko Village, you should also try out the local dishes, which is both economical and delicious.

Stewed chicken soup with Gingko nut, stewed pig intestines with Gingko nut, steamed eggs with Gingko blossom, etc. Gingko nut is the most representative food material here.

Touring attraction – Heshun Ancient Town

As we mentioned, Tengchong is an ancient border town, so there is also a famous ancient town for visiting. Heshun ancient town is the most famous and well-preserved one.

When touring in Tengchong, you cannot miss visiting Heshun ancient town. It is located in the west of Tengchong County, with a distance of 4 km. It used to be an important transfer station on the Tea and Horse Caravan Road and Southern Silk Road.

The Heshun ancient town is surrounded by hills in three directions. Many traditional constructions built in Ming and Qing dynasties are well preserved here.

Touring attraction – Volcanic and Geothermal National Park of Tengchong

When visiting Tengchong, you must learn a bit about its geographical conditions. Tengchong is known as a natural museum on the Southern Silk Road, where the world’s rare volcanic geothermal geographical landscape is displayed.

Tengchong is the only area in the Chinese mainland where modern volcanoes and geothermal coexist, and it is also an important part of the global geotropic and volcanic belts. Famous geothermal and Earth science experts have visited and worked in Tengchong many times.

All well-known and large-scale geothermal areas (geothermal fields) in the world appear on the edge of modern active plates, and the Tengchong Volcanic Geothermal Area is no exception.

According to the latest research results, the Tengchong-Baoshan terrane was once part of the Gondwana plate. The Triassic separated from the southern continent and formed the New Tethys Ocean between the southern continent and it. After the Triassic, the Tengchong-Baoshan terrane and the Shaya plate converged, leading to the proliferation of the Asian continent. During the Cretaceous, the Gondwana continent split, and the Indian plate on the north drifted northward and collided with the Eurasian plate in the Eocene. Due to the collision of the two continental plates, the Indian Range Mountains formed west of Tengchong. The Tengchong area is located in the high-temperature zone behind the arc-shaped Indo-Burmese Mountains. The thickness of the crust in the Tengchong area is about 40 km. According to geophysical prospecting, the depth from the crust to the top contact surface of the upper mantle is about 40 to 170km.

Pudacuo National Park – colourful land in autumn

Located in the north-western of Yunnan and the centre of the World Natural Heritage “Three Parallel Rivers”, Pudacuo National Park is consist of the major wetland of Bitahai Nature reserve and Shuduhu Lake. It is also one of the major touring attractions of Shangri-La.

Pudacuo National Park is ideal for visiting in four seasons throughout the whole year. In autumn, most of the plants turn yellow and red. Different colours of nature, blue sky, violet blossom, red leaves, yellow grass, dark green woods, are all interweaving together, which make Pudacuo a spreading roll of painting.

The best time of visiting Pudacauo National Park is from September till November. At the time, the rainy season has gone in October, which makes the sky here look more clear and pure.

The touring area only counted 3% of the total area of the park. Shudu Lake and Bitahai Lake are two of the best spots for visiting.

After visiting Pudacuo National Park, you can go to visit Meili Snow-capped Mountain in Shangri-La

Meili Snow-capped Mountain 

Meili Snow-capped Mountain is located at the southern foot of the Himalayas, the centre of the “Three Parallel Rivers” (Lancang River, Jinsha River, and Nu River) in the Hengduan Mountains. It is the most beautiful and sacred snow-capped mountain group in Yunnan.

Kawagebo, the main peak of Meili Snow-capped Mountain, is the highest peak in Yunnan with an altitude of 6740 meters. Tibetans believe that Mount Kawagebo is their guardian god. Once humans reach the summit, gods will leave them and disaster will come. Because of this special folk culture and religious beliefs, Meili Snow-capped Mountain is the only snow mountain that is forbidden to climb due to cultural protection.

Along your way to Meili Snow-capped Mountain, you can also visit the following touring spots on the road: Jiansha/Lancang River, Eastern Zhulin Temple, Feilai Temple, Mingyong glacier, Yubeng Village, Yubeng Waterfall, Yubeng Ice lake.

Tengchong
